Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Jorvik Ghost?

A Jorvik Ghost is a decorative ornament inspired by York’s Viking heritage. Our ghosts are created from a wide variety of stones, including amethyst, jasper, agate and obsidian, carefully crafted by our suppliers to our specifications and quality standards. See each listing for materials and details, and explore our Releases page for a wider overview.

Important: Our products are decorative only. We do not make medical or therapeutic claims. Any symbolic or wellbeing associations that some people attribute to stones are matters of personal belief.

Where can I browse current and past ghosts?

Available pieces appear in the Shop. Once an apparition finds a keeper it moves to Sold Out. For edition sizes and dates, see Releases.

What does Midgard mean?

Some ghosts slip into Midgard, a waiting hall between worlds. While in Midgard they stay in the Shop but show as temporarily unavailable. They may reappear for purchase without notice, or move straight into Sold Out. Once in Sold Out, that exact edition will not return.

How do listings work?

Most releases are collection listings: photos show the style and quality of the batch, and a ghost is selected at random from that collection when you order. We also run Solo Ghost drops where the photos show the exact piece you’ll receive — these are clearly marked.

How many ghosts do you offer?

We work with over 100 stone types. Editions are small and sizes are fixed. Once a ghost or collection is fully claimed, it will not return in that exact form. For edition counts and dates, see the Releases page.

What does the symbol on the base mean?

Jorvik Ghosts logo combining the Jera and Gebo runes
Jera means cycles and harvest. Gebo means gift and exchange.

Our logo blends the Jera and Gebo runes to celebrate craft, time and fair exchange.

Do you have a registered design and trade mark?

Yes. Registered UK Design No. 6381249 and UK Trade Mark UK00004056058.

Where are Jorvik Ghosts designed and made?

We are based in York, UK, and ship worldwide. Designs are created in York, while carving is carried out by skilled partner workshops overseas to our specifications. We work under supplier NDAs and do not publish workshop locations. Each batch is quality-checked and assembled in York before dispatch.

What materials do you use, and how do you describe them?

We work with a wide range of natural stones (e.g., amethyst, jasper, agate, obsidian). Each piece varies in colour, pattern and inclusions—this natural variation is part of the appeal.

Stone names & transparency: We purchase from established suppliers and use widely recognised trade names, which can differ from strict mineralogical terms. In the stone trade, materials are sometimes enhanced to improve durability or appearance. Where our suppliers disclose any treatment, we pass that on.

Common trade practices include (not an exhaustive list):

  • Stabilised/impregnated (resin or wax to improve strength or polish)
  • Dyed (to deepen or even out colour)
  • Heat-treated (to shift or clarify colour)
  • Composite/reconstituted materials (fragments bound with resin)

Definitive identification of mineral species or treatments requires laboratory testing, which is not included with a purchase.

We pair clear photography with accurate trade conventions so you can choose with confidence. See each product page for material notes relevant to that listing.

Why source internationally rather than locally?

To secure range, consistency and specialist craftsmanship across many stone types, we partner with international workshops while continuing to explore UK collaborations where feasible.

What do you source locally?

We source our packaging from UK suppliers. All ghosts are assembled, placed in their decorative boxes, and dispatched from York, England.

How do you approach sustainability and ethics?

We prioritise transparent descriptions, use recyclable packaging where possible, reuse protective materials, and publish unedited photography. We also fund local tree planting. Environmental claims do not create carbon credits or offsets for purchasers.

Does purchasing a ghost help to plant trees?

We are planting 200 trees in the Yorkshire countryside around Huby and will share progress images over time. Planting is a biodiversity initiative and does not confer carbon credits or offsets.

When do you release ghosts and how can I get alerts?

Surprise drops happen throughout the year. Join our collectors community Jorvik Ghost Collectors for first alerts, plus hints and previews on social channels.

When will my order arrive and how do I track it?

UK delivery is typically 3-5 working days from dispatch. International timings vary by destination and carrier. We will email a tracking link where available. Duties or taxes may apply outside the UK.

How do I return a ghost for a refund?

Email info@jorvikghosts.com within 14 days of delivery to obtain a returns authorisation and the correct return address. Items must be unused, in original condition and packaging. Unless faulty or not as described, you cover return postage. Full details are in our Returns and Refunds Policy.

What is your community etiquette?

We discourage buying for resale so more collectors can enjoy the releases. To keep things fair, we may limit quantities per customer on certain drops and may decline or cancel orders where multiple purchases suggest reselling or attempts to bypass limits.

How do I care for my ornament, and is it safe for children?

Careful handling of a Jorvik Ghost ornament
Handle gently and store in the padded box away from direct sunlight.

Wipe with a soft cloth only. Avoid chemicals, extremes of heat and prolonged sunlight. Our ornaments are decorative collectibles and not toys. Keep out of reach of children and pets. They are not intended for play or personal use. Breakage can produce sharp fragments, so handle with care and dispose of pieces safely.
